The conversion of this fine roadside barn in the Yorkshire Dales National Park also included the creation of additional wildlife habitats.
Protected species such as bats, nesting birds and barn owls may use barns for roosting or nesting. Where they are present, their habitats need to be protected as part of the design. This doesn’t need to be a barrier to conversion; often, relatively simple measures can be incorporated into the building, such as retaining existing openings, creating discreet bat roosts or providing integrated bird boxes. By considering ecology early in the design process, these features can be sensitively incorporated alongside the architecture.
